A YCU alumnus, Prof. Dr. S. M. Abe Kawsar, University of Chittagong, published two academic books from a German publisher.

Prof. Dr. Kawsar is an honorable alumnus at Yokohama City University (YCU) who was promoted to a professor position after the completion of the Ph.D. program (2005-2009). In 2014, he was promoted to professor at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. Prof. Dr. Kawsar returned to YCU the next year as a visiting professor at the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He researched on clinical and diagnostical applications of marine invertebrate lectins and provided special lectures at YCU as visiting professor.

Research team led by YCU professor successfully develops a rapid diagnostic test for COVID-19 that can detect antiviral antibodies in patient serum

A research group led by Professor Akihide Ryo of Yokohama City University Graduate School of Medicine’s Department of Microbiology has successfully developed Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and a rapid immunochromatographic test which can specifically detect the IgG SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

Compound lights up brain receptors in PET scans

A radiotracer specifically binds to a major class of brain receptors when injected into living rats and humans, lighting them up in PET scans. The compound, called [11C]K-2, was designed and tested by a large team of scientists in Japan, led by Professor Takuya Takahashi of the department of physiology at Yokohama City University Graduate School of Medicine. It shows promise for diagnosing and treating epilepsy and for improving understanding of psychiatric diseases. Details of the team’s findings were published in the journal Nature Medicine.
