The present review article introduced several intravenous contrast media (CMs) for liver imaging according to the biobehavioral features, like inside distribution and metabolization pathway, which is a brief summarized navigating map of CMs that are commonly used in the clinic. Beyond the classical wash-in and wash-out characteristics provided by classical blood pool contrast agents, an additional Kupffer phase could be provided by Sonazoid, a micrometer-scaled microbubble with inert gas enveloped inside as an ultrasound contrast agent (UCA). Likewise, by means of extracellular contrast agents, reticuloendothelial system endocytosis and hepatocyte-specific uptake agents bring more informative images to diagnostic MRI. Moreover, the molecular imaging agents, including immune molecular probes, stimulus-responsive/microenvironment dependent contrast agents, and scale-dependent particles have drawn a blueprint for future liver imaging.（Zhang Y）
