JSPS & Other Postdoctoral Fellows

May 1, 2025

We are actively seeking postdoctoral researchers to join our Team at the Bioinformatics Laboratory. Please review our ongoing research projects to identify areas of alignment with your expertise and interests. For more details on postdoctoral opportunities and application procedures, please refer to the information below. Questions? Feel free to email Jordan.

What is the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship?

This prestigious program is funded by the Japanese government to support outstanding early-career researchers from overseas across various scientific fields. The Standard Program fellowship offers PhD holders the opportunity to conduct collaborative research at universities and research institutions throughout Japan for a duration of 12 to 24 months. It includes a tax-free monthly allowance of ¥362,000, round-trip airfare, and a settling-in allowance of up to ¥200,000—support that more than covers the cost of living in Tokyo, with Yokohama and surrounding areas being even more affordable.

How to apply for the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship?

An advance joint application, including an original research proposal, is required and must be prepared collaboratively by the Host Researcher in Japan (us) and the Foreign Candidate (you). The documents are then submitted either (1) directly to JSPS or to its (2) Nominating Authority (selected countries only), which conduct the selection process. Interested candidates should first email Jordan.

Other Funded Fellowships

For postdocs interested in working with us in Japan with funding from around the world, several global programs are available beyond JSPS. The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Global Fellowships (EU) and the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) (international) support research stays in Japan. From the United States, organizations like the NIH, NSF, and Fulbright Program offer fellowships or grants for international research collaboration. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany) also allows research stays abroad, including Japan, under certain conditions. Additionally, programs from Canada’s NSERC, Australia’s ARC, and funding bodies in countries like India (SERB), China (CSC), South Korea (NRF), and Brazil (CNPq) may support overseas postdoctoral research, often requiring a host institution in Japan.

Many additional funding options not listed above may also be available. Some private foundations—such as the Canon Foundation in Europe, the Toyota Foundation, and the Hitachi Fellowships—also support international researchers conducting work in Japan.

Please explore the above or other relevant funding options and feel free to get in touch.
