Research Projects<\/h2>\n

\u3000This laboratory studies the mechanism underlying the development and function of immune cells with an emphasis on gene expression control by transcription factors. We also investigate the molecular pathogenesis of diseases such as cancers (solid tumors and leukemias) and autoimmune diseases, and aim at developing new therapies for them. For example, we have found essential roles of the transcription factor IRF8 in the development of mononuclear phagocyes (monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells). IRF8 establishes appropriate enhancer landscapes in mononuclear phagocyte progenitors to prepare for \u201cfuture\u201d gene expression, thereby determining their differentiation directions. We also found that recovering IRF8 expression is an attractive strategy for new therapies of chronic myeloid leukemia.
\u3000In accordance with the rapid development of high throughput experiments including next-generation sequencing (for ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, [single cell] RNA-seq, Hi-C), mass spectrometry, and bioinformatics, the study of transcription is entering a new era. We use these cutting-edge techniques as well as various gene-modified mice and pursue analyses at molecular to in vivo levels. We perform not only \u2018basic\u2019 research to reveal fundamental principles of cell differentiation (likely to describe beyond the immune system) but also \u2018applied\u2019 research to develop new drugs under industry-government-academia projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
