The entire genome of the poxvirus (Entomopoxvirinae) of the North American migratory grasshopper, Melanoplus sanguinipes, is 236 kbp and contains 267 open reading frames, of which 107 are similar to previously described genes [80]. One gene encodes MSV, 140 residues. MSV has four EF-hands, the first two of which are inferred to bind calcium. It is the only known EF-hand protein from a virus.
