Our laboratory works at the nexus of environmental microbiology, analytical chemistry and toxicology with two overarching themes:
1) Investigation of microorganisms that transform hazardous environmental pollutants with special attention to petroleum hydrocarbons such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic PAHs.
– Mechanisms of organic pollutant transformation
– Bioremediation of oil hydrocarbons
– Functionalization of heavy oil hydrocarbons in the context of oil upgrading
– Biodiesel waste glycerol conversion to polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) by bacteria
2) Investigation of the effects of hazardous chemical exposure to nucleic acids through the formation of DNA and RNA modifications.
-Development of the fields of DNA and RNA adductomics
-Chemical characterization of DNA and RNA adducts
